Sports Mole

Liverpool Women will face West Ham United Women for the second time in a matter of days when the two sides face off at St Helens Stadium in Sunday's Women's Super League fixture.

The Reds will be looking for another strong performance after easing to a commanding win in their midweek Women's FA Cup clash with the Hammers.

Match preview

Preview: Liverpool vs. West Ham - prediction, team news, lineups

Liverpool have experienced a poor run of form in the WSL, having lost five of their previous six top-flight matches, including a narrow defeat in last Sunday's away meeting with Leicester City.

Olivia Smith put the Reds in front in the third minute, but goals from Janice Cayman and Missy Goodwin ultimately left them with nothing to show for their efforts.

Matt Beard's side managed to quickly pick themselves up for Wednesday's Women's FA Cup clash against West Ham, producing a free-scoring display to clinch a 5-0 victory thanks to goals from Leanne Kiernan, Grace Fisk, Lucy Parry, Sam Kerr and a Camila Saez own goal.

After experiencing a successful trip to the capital, Liverpool will now return home for another meeting with Beard's former club, with the hosts looking to claim back-to-back home victories after beating Brighton & Hove Albion in their most recent outing at St Helens Stadium.

The Reds took maximum points from their most recent head-to-head home meeting in March 2024 when they ran out 3-1 winners against the Hammers.

West Ham took a considerable step towards preserving their top-flight status with a 2-0 victory in last Sunday's home game against Everton.

Shekiera Martinez and Viviane Asseyi grabbed a goal apiece to fire West Ham to their third league win of the season, moving them six points clear of the relegation playoff spot.

Unfortunately for the Hammers, they were unable to back up that result in their midweek cup tie with Liverpool, conceding five goals for the second time in three competitive home games, as they fell to a heavy defeat in a game where they had to play over 50 minutes with 10 players following Amber Tysiak's first-half red card.

Rehanne Skinner's side will be seeking revenge in Sunday's WSL fixture, but that may be easier said than done given the fact that they have failed to win any of their last 11 away league games (D2, L9).

As a result, the visitors will be looking to claim their first WSL away victory since edging out Bristol City in January 2024.

Team News

Liverpool are expected to be without the services of Sofie Lundgaard, Niamh Fahey, Jasmine Matthews and Faye Kirby.

Defender Hannah Silcock is also likely to be absent for Sunday's WSL fixture after missing the last two matches through injury.

Parry and Sophie Roman Haug are pushing for starting spots after featuring as half-time substitutes in Wednesday's 5-0 win.

As for the visitors, Tysiak will serve a suspension after being shown a straight red card in the midweek FA Cup tie.

With Tysiak suspended, Canada international Shelina Zadorsky could come into the backline for Sunday's WSL fixture.

January addition Vera Hanshaw may come into the side after being ineligible for Wednesday's cup defeat, while there could also be a recall for Seraina Piubel.

Liverpool Women possible starting lineup:
Szemik; Li, Zadorsky, Saez, Denton; Hanshaw, Martinez, Gorry, Piubel; Asseyi, Ueki

West Ham United Women possible starting lineup:
Laws; Fisk, Clark, Evans; Parry, Hobinger, Kerr, Holland, Hinds; Smith, Hobinger

We say: Liverpool Women 2-1 West Ham United Women

Liverpool will be full of confidence after sweeping past West Ham in Wednesday's cup tie, and while we think that Sunday's fixture will be a much closer affair, we believe that the Reds will do enough to beat the Hammers for the second time in a week.
