Great Britain's Lois Toulson made a late surge up the rankings to finish in fifth place in the women's 10m diving final at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka.

The 23-year-old improved on her semi-final score by nearly six marks as she posted a total of 319.30, breaking into the top five thanks to a 72.00 on her final routine and securing a quota place for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Toulson was down in 10th spot with two dives remaining but propelled herself into eighth place with a 67.20 in the penultimate round, before saving her best routine for last, but she is still waiting for her maiden individual medal at the World Championships.

China's early dominance continued in Japan as reigning champion Chen Yuxi (457.85) won her third consecutive title, meaning that China have nine gold medals from the nine diving finals so far.

Yuxi's compatriot Quan Hongchan clinched the silver medal with 445.60, while Canadian bronze medallist Caeli McKay was over 100 points worse off with 340.25, and Mexico's Gabriela Agundez Garcia pipped Toulson to fourth place with 325.35 on the board.

Euroepan and Commonwealth champion Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix - who won a historic 10m synchro silver alongside Toulson on Sunday - just missed out on a spot in the 12-person final, posting the 13th-best score in the semi-finals. body check tags ::
