Marianne Faithfull has been admitted to hospital after testing positive for coronavirus, the legendary singer-songwriter's management have confirmed.

The 73-year-old was one of the stars of the so-called 'British Invasion' of the US in the 1960s and is known for her distinctive raspy voice, gained as a result of battles with laryngitis and drugs early in her career.

A spokesperson for Faithfull told the Daily Mail: "Marianne Faithfull's manager Francois Ravard has confirmed that she is being treated for Covid-19 in hospital in London.

"She is stable and responding to treatment, we all wish her well and a full and speedy recovery."

The 'Broken English' singer - former girlfriend of Mick Jagger during his '60s pomp - has had a history of health issues and in 2014 was forced to cancel her 50th anniversary world tour as a result of an infection caused by a hip injury.

Almost 1.2 million people worldwide have now tested positive for COVID-19, with more than 64,500 losing their lives.
