Louis Theroux says that he does not believe Tiger King star Joe Exotic's assertion that Carole Baskin murdered her husband and fed him to tigers.

Documentary maker Louis Theroux has said that he does not believe Tiger King's Carole Baskin killed her ex-husband.

The hit Netflix series tells the story of eccentric zookeeper Joe Exotic and his long-standing rivalry with Baskin, who runs a big cat sanctuary in Florida.

During the show, Exotic states his belief that Baskin murdered her husband Don Lewis, who mysteriously went missing in 1997, and fed his body to her tigers.

Baskin has always denied the allegations and now Theroux, who spent time with Exotic for a 2011 documentary, has given her his backing.

"I knew a lot of stuff about the alleged murder for hire plot," Theroux is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

"Joe had always said he thought Carole Baskin had arranged the murder of her husband and fed the husband to her tigers, which needless to say she denies and I don't believe."

On the success of Tiger King, which has been watched by 64 million households worldwide, he added: "I thought it was an entertaining and amazing romp through this netherworld of big cat owners and it really gripped my attention.

"I did think the tiger perspective was slightly lost, that was my little quibble. I thought here is an animal rights story, which they did at the end a bit, but you didn't see the foreground."

During the show it was revealed that Exotic was so convinced of Baskin's guilt that he had filmed a country music video in which a Carole Baskin lookalike feeds human remains to tigers.
