Carlos Alcaraz's stunning victory over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men's final peaked with more than 11.2 million viewers for BBC One yesterday, according to overnight figures.

Reigning champion Djokovic had claimed the title seven times heading into the match, but in a pulsating encounter lasting more than four hours, the man 16 years his junior eventually prevailed over five tough sets.

Overall, coverage of the encounter averaged 6.53m (56.8%) between 1pm and 7.10pm, which included an hour of build-up as well as the post-match trophy presentations and interviews.

The mammoth peak of 11.24m (66.3%) came at 6.52pm as the Spaniard sealed his victory.

Overnight ratings figures do not take into account the number of viewers who may have been watching in pubs, bars or other non-household settings.
