British fencer James Honeybone has lost in the last 16 of the individual sabre to Romanian Tiberiu Dolniceanu.
Dolniceanu, ranked third in the world, edged the first period 8-7 before blitzing the second period 15-10.
The tournament can be seen as successful for Honeybone though, who is ranked 61st in the world.
It has been a disappointing day at the fencing for Great Britain after Corinna Lawrence also lost in the last 16 of the individual epee earlier.
