A goal each from Scott Neville and Jeronimo Neumann helped Newcastle Jets get their first win of the season and see off Adelaide United in the 10th anniversary game of the Hyundai A-League.
Adelaide were all over the Newcastle defence all match but two breakaway goals in the second half nullified any threat that United could muster.
Adelaide had the lion's share of possession and put Newcastle under severe pressure with Andrew Hoole's effort somehow kept out by Eugene Galekovic, who had an outstanding game for the entire 90 minutes.
But against the run of play it was Newcastle who struck the first blow in the 49th minute, Adrian Madaschi squaring the ball to Scott Neville who knocked the ball through the legs of Galekovic to grab the goal.
United brought on Awer Mabil at half-time and the former National Youth League Player of the Year had an immediate impact, chipping the ball to James Jeggo who squared it for Craig Goodwin to equal the scoring.
The South-Australian club were all over Newcastle out wide and if players had been able to get on the end of numerous Mabil crosses, the game would have been well and truly over.
Instead it was substitute Jeronimo Neumann who scored the winning goal. Dave Carney cut in from the right to play a lovely ball for Neumann who finished beautifully in the bottom left corner.
The win leaves Phil Stubbins with his first for the club while Adelaide will have to go back to the drawing board after two losses in a row.
