Arsene Wenger calls on UEFA to toughen up and issue Champions League bans to clubs who breach the Financial Fair Play regulations.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has encouraged UEFA to toughen up and issue Champions League bans to clubs who breach the Financial Fair Play regulations.

Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are among those waiting to discover their punishment having failed to adhere to the rules by exceeding permitted losses of £37m over the past two seasons.

As it stands, hefty fines and player restrictions are among the sanctions being considered by Europe's governing body, but Wenger claims that the penalties under discussion are too "sophisticated" and that there is only one way to avoid future offences.

"I think the punishment is sophisticated," he told the press. "I would like a more simple one that makes more sense, although they have studied that for a very long time certainly to be in accordance with the legal side of it.

"You would think that you accept the rules and you're in the competition or you don't accept the rules and you're not in the competition. Then, everybody would understand it.

"There are rules and you respect them or you don't respect them. If you don't respect them, you have to be punished. When Uefa doesn't want to kick the clubs out of the Champions League, they have to find a more subtle punishment."

City are thought to be facing a fine of around £50m, but the Sky Blues are said to be working on reducing that figure.
