Arsenal vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Previous FA Cup meetings

Sports Mole looks back over the five previous FA Cup meetings between North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have met on well over 150 occasions.

Five of those clashes have come in the FA Cup, with their sixth encounter in the competition taking place later today.

Ahead of that tie, Sports Mole reviews the quintet of outings that have proceeded it.

1. Arsenal 3-0 Tottenham, January 1949
The first time that these rivals locked horns in the FA Cup, Spurs were a Second Division club, albeit one that was challenging at the right end of the table. Arsenal, meanwhile, were Division One champions and their class showed at Highbury. In the end, unanswered goals from Doug Lishman, Ian McPherson and Don Roper secured the home side's place in round four.

2. Tottenham 1-0 Arsenal, January 1982
Ricky Villa's dancing feet secured Spurs the trophy in 1981 and the holders would go on to retain it 12 months later, beating Arsenal along the way. One goal was enough, scored by Garth Crooks, who also found the net during the previous season's final against Manchester City.

3. Tottenham 3-1 Arsenal, April 1991
The Football Association decided that this semi-final should be played at Wembley and Paul Gascoigne went on to score a goal that was fitting of the famous venue. With just five minutes on the clock, the playmaker fired an effort from 35 yards out into the top corner of David Seaman's net. Gary Lineker soon doubled that advantage and while Alan Smith reduced the arrears, the match was put out of Arsenal's reach in the closing stages by Lineker.

4. Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham, April 1993
Revenge was on Arsenal's agenda two years later, again at Wembley. The Gunners had won the League Cup earlier in the year against Sheffield Wednesday and they would go on to beat the same opposition in the FA Cup final after this slender victory. Centre-back Tony Adams was the hero, heading in Paul Merson's cross 11 minutes from time.

5. Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham, April 2001
Another semi-final, although this time the sides met at Old Trafford. Spurs were regarded to be the underdogs, but they took the lead in the 14th minute courtesy of Gary Doherty. However, French midfielder Patrick Vieira drew Arsenal level before the break, before Robert Pires booked their place in the final 16 minutes from the end. Incidentally, Sol Campbell limped out of this match, which was his last for Spurs prior to his free transfer to Arsenal.
