A Mikel Arteta own goal gives West Bromwich Albion a 2-1 lead over Arsenal in their Premier League clash, following goals from Olivier Giroud and James Morrison.

A Mikel Arteta own goal has given West Bromwich Albion a 2-1 lead over Arsenal in their Premier League clash this afternoon.

The visitors dominated possession early in the game, but were unable to create any clear opportunities until the quarter-hour mark, when Boaz Myhill denied Alexis Sanchez from a free kick with a low save.

The Chilean winger fired wide moments later as the Gunners grew increasingly frustrated by their opponents' resistance and their own lack of quality in the final third.

Arsene Wenger's side managed to break the deadlock on 28 minutes, as Mesut Ozil found Olivier Giroud with a well-struck free kick, leaving the French striker to head past Myhill.

Arsenal should have scored a second goal moments later when Sanchez set up Kieran Gibbs on the edge of the West Brom penalty area, but the England international fired well over the bar.

The Baggies found an equaliser against the run of play on 35 minutes, as Chris Brunt whipped an inviting cross to the far post, where James Morrison connected to fire past Petr Cech.

Tony Pulis's side added a second goal five minutes later thanks to a deflection from Arteta, who connected with a James McClean cross to put the ball into his own net.
