Mark Hughes: 'Charlie Adam didn't intend Alexis Sanchez stamp'

Mark Hughes defends Charlie Adam over his supposed 'stamp' on Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez at the weekend, which he feels is not worthy of retrospective action.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has insisted that Charlie Adam did not intend to stamp on Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez, claiming that he "would be absolutely astounded" if any retrospective action was taken.

The Scotland international caught Sanchez with his boot during the 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, which came in the build-up to the Gunners' killer third goal.

Stoke are awaiting the Football Association's decision over whether any further action will be taken, with referee Lee Mason seemingly missing it at the time, but Hughes believes that former Liverpool midfielder Adam deserves to escape without any sort of ban.

"I would be absolutely astounded if any charge was forthcoming, it's not warranted," he told reporters. "At the time it's very quick. When you see the slow motion frame-by-frame, people jump up and down, but in real time the lad (Sanchez) has fallen across Charlie's path and he hasn't had time to take evasive action."

Wenger is also expected to escape FA punishment for placing his hands on fourth official Paul Tierney in the aftermath of Stoke being awarded a penalty.
