Tim Sherwood has said that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger should leave the club, adding that the Frenchman has "run out of time" at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners, who lost 3-0 to Manchester City in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, are eight points adrift of the Premier League's top four as their domestic season begins to peter out.

Despite still being in the running for a Europa League crown this term, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Sherwood has called for an overhaul in North London.

"The players are not good enough to challenge for the Premier League title," the 49-year-old told Sky Sports News. "The Arsenal fans want a team to challenge but they're miles away from that at the moment.

"They need more players, different types of players, a better balance to their squad, and they need a new voice. I love Arsene Wenger and I love what he's done for that football club and I'd always support him as much as I can, but I think they've run out of time.

"They need a new voice. And the players need a new voice. Sometimes you listen to the same voice too many times and you can listen to him all you want if you're winning, but when you start losing, you need to change the voice."

Arsenal could move to within seven points of the Champions League places with a win over City in the league meeting between the sides on Thursday.
