Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that new arrival Takehiro Tomiyasu is still waiting for a work permit to play in the Premier League.
The Japan international arrived from Bologna on transfer deadline day after Hector Bellerin's loan move to Real Betis, before linking up with the national team for September's international fixtures.
Saturday's game against Norwich City was expected to come too soon for Tomiyasu to feature, and Arteta has now updated fans on the defender's situation while talking up his versatility.
Speaking to the press ahead of the clash with the Canaries, Arteta said: "We need a work permit first. The club is working hard to try and achieve that in the next couple of hours.
"Tomiyasu has the ability to play anywhere in a back four. He gives us different qualities in that right back position. He brings qualities that we didn't have in the squad."
Arteta has also confirmed that Granit Xhaka is still in Switzerland after testing positive for coronavirus over the international break.
