Arsenal are in talks with Newcastle United over a deal for Joe Willock, Magpies manager Steve Bruce has confirmed.
The 21-year-old caught the eye during a stellar six-month loan spell at St James' Park last season, scoring eight goals in 14 Premier League appearances under Bruce's tutelage.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta had seemingly ruled out an exit for Willock this summer, but Bruce has confirmed that his side are "in dialogue" with Arsenal over a move and remains optimistic about getting a deal over the line.
Speaking to reporters after his side's 3-0 friendly win over Norwich City, Bruce said: "We're in dialogue with Arsenal, but we have to respect he's their player. Until we can reach an agreement with Arsenal, and what they want, the rest is immaterial.
"I really, really hope (we can sign someone next week). We're still hopeful we can get our main target – I'll try my utmost to make it happen."
Willock - also linked with Ligue 1 giants Monaco - has under two years left to run on his deal with Arsenal, who reportedly value him in the region of £25m. body check tags ::
