Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs 'monitoring Nico Williams's situation'

Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly all keeping an eye on Nico Williams's contract situation at Athletic Bilbao.

There is currently a host of speculation surrounding the Spain international's future, as his contract at San Mames is due to expire next June.

Barcelona are being heavily linked with the 21-year-old, and a recent report claimed that the Catalan outfit had come to an agreement with the player to sign him next year.

However, it was then claimed that Williams had verbally agreed a two-year contract extension with Athletic, which would take him until the summer of 2026.

Even if the Spaniard pens a new deal, his future at San Mames would be far from secure, as it is thought that the release clause in his contract could be as low as €50m (£43.6m).

Real Madrid are also believed to be admirers, while Bayern Munich and Juventus are among the other major European clubs thought to be monitoring the developments.

Chelsea and Aston Villa are said to be keen from the Premier League, but according to 90min, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are also interested in his signature.

The report claims that the trio have 'checked in on him', as he would be available to sign a pre-contract with a foreign club in January if he does not extend his Athletic deal before then.

Williams has been with Athletic since 2013, progressing through their various age groups before making his first-team debut in April 2021.

The Spaniard has now featured on 92 occasions for the Lions in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and registering 11 assists in the process.

Williams has four assists in seven La Liga appearances this term, meanwhile, and he played against Barcelona last weekend despite concerns over his fitness heading into that match.

Athletic remain confident of signing Williams to a new contract, with a departure on a free transfer thought to be unlikely despite the recent speculation.

The Basque side's president Jon Uriarte recently told Movistar: "Both Nico and his family are very happy in Bilbao and at Athletic Bilbao. We both are working so that he can stay here for many years."

Williams has also scored twice in 10 appearances for Spain and is widely expected to be a part of their squad for next summer's European Championship providing that he is fit and available. body check tags ::
