Werder Bremen captain Clemens Fritz has revealed that he has talked to Per Mertesacker over a potential January switch from Arsenal.
The Gunners defender is reportedly wanted by the German club after seeing his future at the Emirates Stadium cast into doubt in recent weeks.
Mertesacker has yet to play this season due to a knee injury and has seen his place in the side taken by compatriot Shkodran Mustafi, who joined in a £35m deal from Valencia during the summer.
Speaking to German publication Bild, Bremen skipper Fritz admitted that he would like to see Mertesacker make a return to the Weserstadion, five years after he departed for North London.
"We've talked about [a return to Bremen]," he said. "It would be a good thing for the club."
Mertesacker is still Arsenal's captain and is under contract until the end of the current campaign.
