Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes that he was right to leave Darren Bent on the bench as his side slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has insisted that he made the right decision in choosing to drop Darren Bent for the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Bent was left on the bench in favour of Christian Benteke, who missed a pair of gilt-edged chances as goals from Steven Caulker and Aaron Lennon condemned Villa to a 2-0 loss at White Hart Lane.

Following the match, Lambert was adamant that Benteke merited his place ahead of the England international because of the physical qualities he brings to the side.

He told Sky Sports News: "It's the decision I made. It's the system we play and it was the right decision in my view.

"I just think Darren is a better player with someone up beside him. Christian is a big, strong player who can lead the line.

"When you pick a team, you've got to think of the opposition you're playing as well.

"Darren has been fine, I would tell you if he wasn't. I understand his frustration but I try and pick a side that might win us the game. He will play games, I need everybody. I'm not going to make a mountain out of a molehill."

A fourth defeat of the season for Villa leaves Paul Lambert's side in 16th place in the Premier League, two points above the relegation zone after seven matches.
