Atletico Madrid moved into second in La Liga with a 2-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday.

Saul Niguez scored late in the first period to hand the Spanish champions a one-goal lead.

Their second arrived soon after the break, with Modibo Diakite turning into his own net from close range.

ATLETICO

Goal

Miguel Moya: Had his feet up for much of the 90 minutes. Was not called into action until late on when he made a fairly routine save to deny Sidnei. (6/10)

Defence

Juanfran: Has been in fine form in recent weeks, but was strangely subdued in the capital. Did not really feature as an attacking threat despite his team's dominance. (6/10)

Diego Godin: Calm and composed, as always, at the heart of the defence. Guided international teammate Jose Gimenez on what was a comfortable afternoon. (7/10)

Jose Gimenez: Brought into the team due to Miranda's injury and put in a strong display. Never shirked a challenge and looked calm in possession of the ball. (7/10)

Cristian Ansaldi: Seems to have won the battle for the left-back position and put on another strong display at the Calderon. Equally effective in both forward and defensive positions. (7/10)

Midfield

Koke: Wasted a number of free kicks, but ultimately played his part in both goals. Another impressive display from the ever-improving Spanish international. (7/10)

Tiago: Kept it neat and tidy in the middle of the park on his return to the team. Never wasted possession, but did not really feature in the final third. (6/10)

Saul Niguez: Really good stuff from the Spanish international, who opened the scoring late in the first period. Always looked a threat from a deep midfield position. (8/10)

Attack

Arda Turan: Will claim the second goal, but might miss out. Radiated class each time that he had possession and was at the forefront of his side's three points. (8/10)

Mario Mandzukic: Rattled the post with a clever header in the first period, but left early in the second period with a reported hamstring complaint. (6/10)

Antoine Griezmann: Still struggling to find his best form for the capital outfit. Had some bright moments, but was a little untidy in possession of the ball. (6/10)

Substitutes

Raul Jimenez: Gave his side a different threat in the final third and came close with a couple of attempts. A decent cameo from the Mexican. (6/10)

Cristian Rodriguez: Should have added a third late on, but placed his low effort just wide of the post. As usual, looked likely from the bench. (6/10)

Alessio Cerci: Tested Fabricio with a long-range effort late on and looked lively during his 15 minutes on the field. (6/10)

DEPORTIVO

Goal

Fabricio: Made some smart saves and could do little with either Atletico goal. Needed a little bit more protection from those around him. (6/10)

Defence

Juanfran: Picked up the first booking of the match for a poor challenge on Ansaldi, before departing with a hamstring problem after just 16 minutes. (5/10)

Sidnei: Quite comfortably his side's best player. Looked strong in defensive areas and also made an impact in the final third of the field. Had Depor's only attempt on target. (7/10)

Modibo Diakite: Will surely get credited with Atletico's second, but aside from that moment, the centre-back did well to cope with the challenge of Mandzukic. (6/10)

Pablo Insua: Also picked up a booking in the first period and faded from that moment. Struggled to get forward due to Atletico's domination for long spells. (6/10)

Midfield

Luisinho: Tasked with providing both defensive cover and attacking support, but struggled to make his mark against such an organised Atletico XI. (6/10)

Jose Rodriguez: Showed some nice touches in the final third and always looked capable of making something happen, but lacked support when it mattered post. (6/10)

Cezary Wilk: Managed to quell a number of attacks in the first period, but did not see enough of the ball to really make his mark on the match. (6/10)

Haris Medunjanin: Departed just past the hour mark after a fairly ineffective performance. Gave the ball away too often and struggled to deal with the pace of the match. (5/10)

Ivan Cavaleiro: Would have been expected to provide support to lone forward Helder Postiga, but that never really transpired. Not his best performance of the season. (5/10)

Attack

Helder Postiga: Really struggled, but will point to the lack of support. Does not have the pace to run into the channels and lost most of the aerial battles. (5/10)

Substitutes

Laure: Replaced Juanfran after just 16 minutes and did well to pick up the pace of the match. That said, his delivery from wide positions was disappointing. (6/10)

Isaac Cuenca: Was given the final 30 minutes at the Calderon and provided an injection of pace in the final third. Was a surprise that the attacker did not start. (6/10)

Toche: Entered after 77 minutes, but hardly had a touch of the ball. (5/10)
