Atletico Madrid saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end this afternoon as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Valencia.

A Miranda own goal began an early goal rush for the hosts, with Andre Gomes and Nicolas Otamendi also scoring to give Valencia a 3-0 lead inside 15 minutes.

Mario Mandzukic did pull a goal back for the champions, but their day went from bad to worse when Guilherme Siqueira missed a penalty and Alessio Cerci was sent off.

Here, Sports Mole takes a look at who impressed in an action-packed match at the Mestalla.

Goal

Diego Alves: Should have done better for the goal having parried the ball straight into the path of Mandzukic, but atoned for that mistake by saving the penalty. (7/10)

Defence

Antonio Barragan: Part of a fine defensive display that kept Atletico at arm's length throughout the second half. (7/10)

Shkodran Mustafi: Played the ball forward that led to the own goal. Was sound defensively throughout as Atletico struggled to break through. (7/10)

Nicolas Otamendi: Scored the third goal with a fine header, and also contributed largely to the defensive solidity his side showed in the second half. (8/10)

Jose Gaya: Was unfortunate to give away a penalty, but was let off when the spot kick was saved. Was up and down the left flank all match, giving his side a useful outlet. (7/10)

Midfield

Dani Parejo: Decent performance in midfield as he helped nullify the threat of Turan, Griezmann and Koke. (7/10)

Javi Fuego: Kept possession well in the middle of the park as Valencia prevented Atletico from piling on the pressure in the second half. (7/10)

Andre Gomes: Got his side's second goal, and it was the pick of the bunch. The defending left a lot to be desired, but Gomes showed good skill to break into the box and impressive composure to finish. (7/10)

Attack

Rodrigo: Showed good pace and trickery out wide on a few occasions, although his final ball was lacking at times. (6/10)

Paco Alcacer: Started brightly with some clever runs that kept Atletico on their toes, but faded as the match wore on and was withdrawn in the 75th minute. (6/10)

Pablo Piatti: Swung in the corner for the third goal and was a threat on the wing throughout before being replaced shortly after the hour mark. (7/10)

Substitutes

Lucas Orban: Came on in the 63rd minute and had an impact, dealing with Cerci with consummate ease. (7/10)

Filipe Augusto: Replaced Gomes with just under 20 minutes remaining and helped keep Atletico at bay during the closing stages. (6/10)

Sofiane Feghouli: Decent 15-minute cameo from the Algerian, who kept possession well and was always a willing runner forward. (6/10)

Goal

Miguel Moya: Should have done better with the second goal, when he was beaten at his near post, and showed a lack of communication for the opening goal, although the bulk of the blame there lies with Miranda. Was also a little out of position for the third. (5/10)

Defence

Jesus Gamez: Didn't have a huge impact on the match down the right flank. Struggled to make a difference going forward but was solid enough at the back when Atletico began to improve. (6/10)

Miranda: Scored one of the worst own goals you will see this season, nodding past his own keeper with no threat to the goal at all. Also should have done better for the second, when he allowed Gomes to dance past him. (4/10)

Diego Godin: Like his teammates, endured a nightmare start to the match as the defence shipped three early goals. Improved as the game progressed, but the early defensive errors proved costly. (5/10)

Guilherme Siqueira: Missed a crucial penalty just before half time that would have sent his side into the break with just a one-goal deficit. Tried to get forward in general play but didn't have much of an impact in the opposition's half. (5/10)

Midfield

Tiago: Supplied the shot that led to Mandzukic's goal, and battled away in the middle of the park all night. Was probably his side's best player. (7/10)

Gabi: Kept possession fairly well for his side, but was unable to find the spark needed to open Valencia up in the second half. (6/10)

Koke: Had a number of chances to threaten with set pieces, but his delivery in general was disappointing. Failed to have his usual impact on the match. (5/10)

Antoine Griezmann: Was fairly anonymous as he struggled to create anything in the final third. Can be a real danger on his day, but that was not the case this afternoon. (5/10)

Arda Turan: Could not get into the game and got no joy against a stubborn and well-drilled Valencia defence. Was taken off with 20 minutes remaining. (5/10)

Attack

Mario Mandzukic: Got the goal from a rebound and also contributed to the penalty, putting Gaya under pressure. Lacked service throughout, but rarely got the better of Otamendi when he had the chance. (7/10)

Substitutes

Alessio Cerci: Spent his 26-minute cameo in the pocket of Orban before being sent off in the closing stages for a second yellow. (4/10)

Raul Jimenez: Came on with 20 minutes remaining but could not alter the course of the match. (6/10)

Raul Garcia: Offered a bit more of a threat in the final third, but still not much. (6/10)
