Barcelona are reportedly tracking Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio.
Ageing centre-back Carles Puyol will be 36 in April, while Javier Mascherano has repeatedly been played as a defender despite making his name as a midfielder.
The La Liga giants have high hopes for 23-year-old Marc Bartra, but Musacchio has been earmarked as a potential summer signing, according to Spanish newspaper, Sport.
Barca are currently second in La Liga.
