Sam Winnall's 39th-minute strike has ensured that Barnsley enter the interval level at 1-1 with Shrewsbury Town.
Shrewsbury took the lead in the seventh minute when Liam Lawrence's corner wasn't dealt with by the hosts and it bounced in off Mark Ellis.
Lawrence had already teed up a chance for Adu Ogogo before the opener, but the defender couldn't direct his header on target.
James Wesolowski only lasted 15 minutes though, and the Shrewsbury midfielder was replaced by debutant Larnell Cole.
The change seemed to affect the visitors and they were left to thank Jayson Leutwiler as he pushed Marley Watkins's strike wide.
Barnsley came even closer a few moments later, as Conor Hourihane's shot cannoned back off the post.
With half time approaching, Winnall collected the ball on the edge of the box before turning a firing a shot beyond the reach of Leutwiler to draw his side level.
In the final stages of the opening period, Barnsley saw two penalty appeals turned down as they piled on the pressure.
