John Lundstram tried his luck from range shortly after in an attempt to double his side's advantage, but his effort was gathered by Brutton in the Brentford goal.
The Bees went in search of a leveller before the interval, and they would have found one on the 35-minute mark if not for Tony McMahon's vital header at the back post to clear a dangerous move.
Just two minutes later Alex Pritchard did find the net after unleashing from the edge of the box to square the game up.
