Former Bolton Wanderers defender Gudni Bergsson is recovering after being stabbed twice in the leg in Iceland.
The 46-year-old is understood to have suffered minor injuries in the attack after rushing to a colleague's aid, who is in a critical condition.
The former Premier League player featured for Bolton more than 300 times before leaving in 2003.
He became a lawyer in his native country after ending his football career.
