Bournemouth and Southampton play out a 1-1 draw in Sunday's Premier League derby at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth and Southampton have played out a 1-1 draw in Sunday's Premier League derby at the Vitality Stadium.

The Saints were quickest out of the starting blocks as the Cherries struggled to get into their stride.

Virgil van Dijk wasted the visitors' clearest opening with a poorly-directed header from James Ward-Prowse's corner.

At the other end, goalkeeper Fraser Forster had a quiet start to the encounter but, midway through the first half, had to deny Jermain Defoe and Nathan Ake in quick succession.

Bournemouth felt that they should have had a penalty just after the half-hour mark when Adam Smith appeared to crumble under pressure from Sofiane Boufal in the box.

Referee Jonathan Moss thought differently, however, and booked the Cherries man for simulation.

Nonetheless, the hosts went on to take the lead on 42 minutes when Joshua King dispossessed Wesley Hoedt before working the ball to Ryan Fraser, who drilled a low, first-time effort past Forster.

Mauricio Pellegrino's side, however, equalised just after the hour through Charlie Austin, who latched on to Nathan Redmond's ball in the area before sweeping home his third goal in two matches.

Austin was denied a second by the offside flag and crossbar soon after, the 28-year-old turning Van Dijk's header onto the woodwork from close range.

Bournemouth had several chances to restore their advantage, King and Callum Wilson coming close, while Austin wasted a gilt-edged chance to give Southampton the win when he headed over from Ryan Bertrand's cross nine minutes from time.

The result sees Bournemouth go up to 14th in the table, while Southampton move up to 11th place.

Bournemouth (4-4-2): Begovic; Smith, Francis, Ake, Daniels; Stanislas (Ibe 69'), Cook, Surman, Fraser (Afobe 90+2'); King, Defoe (Wilson 69')

Southampton (4-2-3-1): Forster; Pied, Van Dijk, Hoedt, Bertrand; Romeu, Davis (Gabbiadini 85'); Ward-Prowse (Redmond 45'), Tadic (Lemina 74'), Boufal; Austin
