Julio Cesar: 'I am proving critics wrong'

Goalkeeper Julio Cesar believes that he is proving his critics wrong after two solid performances in Brazil's opening fixtures at the World Cup.

Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar believes that he has justified his selection in Luis Felipe Scolari's starting lineup during the World Cup.

There had been calls for Cesar to be dropped after his move to the MLS with Toronto, but after helping the host nation to four points from their opening two matches, the former Inter Milan stopper has admitted that the trust placed in him by his teammates and the coaching staff has played its part in his displays.

The 34-year-old told reporters: "During my first press conference here, I made it quite clear that I had prepared a lot to be here after a lot of people had criticised me for the choice that I made to play in a league that, in theory, is a little bit weaker.

"But, I think what's more important is that these people were criticising my work, and I managed to get the trust of the technical commission and my teammates, and I'm working well.

"I think that during the first game, we had a good defence, which helps things when you get a ball that goes in front of the net. It was the same thing in the game against Mexico. The team had a good defence so I could help the squad and maintain the score at 0-0. This trust, it's important for a goalkeeper."

Brazil will qualify for the last 16 if they can beat Cameroon in their final group match on Monday.
