Brentford boss Marinus Dijkhuizen has described his side's performance in their League Cup clash with Oxford United this evening as "embarrassing" and "awful".
The Bees, who reached the Championship playoffs last season, fell to a shock 4-0 defeat at home to the League Two side, ensuring their exit from the competition at the first hurdle.
Oxford scored three times inside the opening 12 minutes to put the game beyond a stunned Brentford, while Jon Mullins added a fourth after the break to seal a memorable result for the visitors.
"It was an embarrassing performance from my team. After 12 minutes it was 0-3 and game over," Dijkhuizen told reporters after the game.
"It was a long night for me but also for the crowd especially and for my players.
"There were a lot of lessons tonight for me and for the players. That's a good thing. The bad thing is we played awful."
Brentford's next match sees them take on newly-promoted Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
