Brighton & Hove Albion forward Ashley Barnes has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association.
The 23-year-old has dismissed in Brighton's 1-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers at the weekend, but a statement from the FA has revealed that the "standard punishment" would not have been sufficient.
The statement read: "It is alleged that Barnes's behaviour in relation to the match official, for which the player was dismissed for violent conduct towards the end of the game, constituted an offence whereby the standard punishment that would otherwise apply was clearly insufficient."
Barnes, who is serving a four-match suspension for the card, has until 6pm on Thursday to respond.
