Burton Albion claim their first points of the 2017-18 Championship season after coming from behind to beat Birmingham City 2-1 at the Pirelli Stadium.

Burton Albion have claimed their first points of the 2017-18 Championship season after coming from behind to beat Birmingham City 2-1 at the Pirelli Stadium.

The first chance of Friday night's game came the way of the Brewers just six minutes in, though Jake Buxton should have done better from a floated corner than to head it directly at David Stockdale.

Birmingham countered with a number of half-chances but, 23 minutes in, the hosts came closest to taking the lead when Jackson Irvine perfectly teed up Matthew Lund in a dangerous position.

However, rather than striking first time, the 26-year-old then played the ball to Marvin Sordell, whose soft effort failed to test Stockdale.

Just three minutes later, the visitors were in front, Clayton Donaldson's far-post cross headed back by Lukas Jutkiewicz to Jacques Maghoma, who had the simple task of tapping home from three yards against his old club.

Nigel Clough's charges rallied round, however, as Sordell made amends for his earlier miss with a dragged backheel followed by a ferocious shot across goal and into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Birmingham set about trying to edge back in front and enjoyed several sterling chances, with Jutkiewicz sending a header into the hands of Stephen Bywater from six yards and Donaldson's acrobatic overhead kick smashing the ball against the post.

The visitors would come to rue their missed opportunities as, 66 minutes in, Burton were in front, Lloyd Dyer playing a one-two with Lucas Akins before weaving through and finding the back of the net.

The result sees Burton climb to 19th in the Championship table with three points from four games, while Birmingham are 13th with four from four.
