Celtic take on St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday evening looking to respond to the weekend's disappointing draw at Kilmarnock.

Meanwhile, the home side head into the encounter with the defending champions having suffered a one-sided defeat to fellow Glasgow giants Rangers.

Match preview

Having thrashed Hamilton Academical on the opening weekend of the season, Celtic would have expected to record a similar result away at Kilmarnock on Sunday afternoon.

However, the Glasgow giants were stunned by their hosts, who found an equaliser from the penalty spot before seeing out the remainder of the contest.

Although it remains early days, Neil Lennon will not enjoy sitting two points adrift of rivals Rangers, especially with his players having under-performed after a week of preparation.

Nevertheless, there is an argument that the setback has come at the right time for Celtic, rather than in the future when they will be attempting to qualify for the Champions League group stages.

Lennon will view the trip to the Simple Digital Arena as the ideal fixture to get back on track after their hosts succumbed tamely at Rangers over the weekend.

While the Buddies were never expected to get the better of last season's runners-up, Jim Goodwin will be disappointed with the level of his side's performance.

St Mirren got just four shots away during the 90 minutes, with Rangers being allowed to register 28 strikes of their own.

Ahead of meeting another high-profile club, Goodwin will naturally have concerns about how his squad will fare against a set of players motivated to keep pace at the top of the standings.

On a positive note, St Mirren can at least head into the contest with the narrow 1-0 win over Livingston on the opening day fresh in their memory.

Team News

Lennon will almost certainly make alterations to his Celtic starting lineup, which should include a recall for Olivier Ntcham.

Patryk Klimala is pushing for his first start since his move to the club, likely at the expense of Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Goodwin may take the opportunity to hand a full debut to 19-year-old Isak Thorvaldsson, on loan from Norwich City, in the centre of the pitch.

Kyle McAllister is also expected to return on the right flank at the expense of Cameron MacPherson.

St Mirren possible starting lineup:
Alnwick; Fraser, McCarthy, Shaughnessy, Tait; Sheron, McGrath, Thorvaldsson; McAllister, Obika, Durmus

Celtic possible starting lineup:
Barkas; Frimpong, Jullien, Ajer, Taylor; Ntcham, Brown, McGregor; Christie, Klimala, Edouard

We say: St Mirren 1-4 Celtic

Despite having witnessed Celtic under-perform against Kilmarnock, that only spells trouble for the home side. We expect the reigning champions to show a ruthless streak here, putting the game to bed during the opening hour.
