Portuguese outfit Benfica moved to the top of Group B with a 2-0 victory away at FC Basel this evening.
Alexander Frei went close for the home side in the opening exchanges, but after he failed to convert from 12 yards, the visitors began to dominate.
That domination was converted into a goal in the 20th courtesy of Bruno Cesar. Argentine midfielder Pablo Aimar was the creator, picking out Cesar who converted his second Champions League goal in as many matches from ten yards out.
Benfica continued to miss chances throughout the match and it wasn't until 15 minutes from time when they sealed the victory.
Substitute Oscar Cardozo claimed the goal, scoring direct from a free kick 25 yards from goal.
Benfica's Emerson was handed his marching orders four minutes from time but it did little to alter the scoreline.
The two sides meet again in Portugal during the fourth round of Champions League group matches.
