Capital One Cup roundup: Championship teams safely through

A number of Championship sides avoided the dreaded giant-killing upset that their lower-league opposition were hoping to inflict in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

Charlton Athletic new boy Simon Church scored a brace on his first start for the Addicks, helping them to overcome League Two outfit Oxford United 4-0 at The Valley.

However, it was far from plain sailing for Leicester City at Adams Park, as they left it late to beat a hard-working Wycombe Wanderers side at Adams Park. David Nugent put the Foxes ahead from the spot after 14 minutes, but the hosts were quickly back on level terms thanks to Jo Kuffour. A late strike from Sean St Ledger saw the Foxes safely through.

Derby County also found it tough over at Boundary Park, but ensured their progression into the next round with a 1-0 victory over Oldham Athletic – Michael Jacobs providing the vital goal midway through the first half.

Sam Baldock and Jordan Wynter scored goals either side of the break against Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium to put Bristol City into the hat for the second round.

Doncaster left it late against Rochdale, advancing thanks to an 89th-minute winner from Bonghani Khumalo.

Bolton Wanderers also secured their place in the next round with a comfortable 3-1 away win over Shrewsbury Town. Robert Hall opened the scoring for Dougie Freedman's side but they were pegged back by an Aaron Wildig effort. However, a goal either side of half time from Sanmi Odelusi earned them the win.

Fellow Championship side Watford will join Bolton in the hat, as they defeated Bristol Rovers 3-1 at the Memorial Stadium. Sean Murray netted a brace for Gianfranco Zola's side while Gabriele Angella added a third. Rovers did find a consolation goal through Eliot Richards.

At the City Ground goals from Radoslaw Majewski, Greg Halford and Matt Derbyshire gave Nottingham Forest an emphatic victory over Hartlepool, though Colin Cooper's men would have been disappointed having spurned a collection of decent chances throughout the game. Neil Austin was the only player able to convert one of Hartlepool's opportunities in the 76th minute.

Millwall passed their first test in the opening round of the Capital One Cup after battling past AFC Wimbledon at The Den. Andy Keogh provided the Lions' first goal in the 2-1 win with a neat left-foot finish shortly after half time. Martyn Woolford then popped up in 76th minute to ensure victory, before Luke Moore added a late consolation for his side.

Queens Park Rangers booked their place in the second round of the Capital One Cup with a 2-0 win over Exeter City at St James' Park. Charlie Austin netted his first goal for the R's in his first start in just the third minute, while Danny Simpson secured the victory with a strike in the 50th minute.

Goals from David Jones, Junior Stanislas, Danny Ings and Scott Arfield helped Burnley through to the next round as they hammered York City 4-0 at Bootham Crescent. Eunan O'Kane scored the only goal of the game in the 54th minute to send Bournemouth to the second round at the expense of Portsmouth.

Last season's runners up Bradford City had little to offer against Huddersfield Town, having rested a number of key players following the weekend's league exploits. A goal either side of half time from James Vaughan was enough for the hosts to progress, despite a late Nakhi Wells consolation.

RESULTS:
Charlton 4-0 Oxford, Wycombe 1-2 Leicester, Oldham 0-1 Derby, Gillingham 0-2 Bristol City, Doncaster 1-0 Rochdale, Shrewsbury 1-3 Bolton, Bristol Rovers 1-3 Watford, Nottm Forest 3-1 Hartlepool, Millwall 2-1 AFC Wimbledon, Exeter 0-2 QPR, York 0-4 Burnley, Huddersfield 2-1 Bradford
