Charlton Athletic are knocked out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers.

Charlton Athletic have been knocked out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 third-round defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers this afternoon at the Valley.

The visitors took the lead after just four minutes following a foray into the Addicks box that was poorly cleared towards Craig Conway. His subsequent cross was headed home by Chris Taylor.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson countered for the hosts just a few minutes later as he drove towards the edge of the box, before dragging a left-footed effort just wide.

Both sides continued to trade chances throughout the first half, with Matthew Kilgallon forcing a save with a long-range effort for Rovers and Johnnie Jackson blazing over the bar for the Addicks.

On the half-hour mark, the action on the pitch had to be postponed for just under fifteen minutes as a floodlight failure forced the players off.

Just six minutes before half time, Charlton had a great chance to pull level when Yoni Buyens's first-time shot flew inches above the Blackburn bar following a George Tucudean deflection.

Despite a flurry of action in the latter stages of the first half, just the one goal separated the sides at the break.

Shortly after the restart, the visitors nearly doubled their lead when Conway collected a Dunn pass before scuffing the ball wide.

The hosts eventually equalised in the 55th minute when Gudmundsson curled a free kick into the top corner of the net from 20 yards out, but Taylor put Rovers ahead again by turning Chris Brown's cross past Neil Etheridge just four minutes later.

Charlton then found themselves with a mountain to climb as Buyens was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 72nd minute.

From then on it was all Blackburn, who pushed forward in a bid to put the game to bed, but Taylor and Ben Marshall found their shots blocked, while Tom Cairney's long-range effort in the latter stages cannoned off the post.
