Millwall too strong for Charlton Athletic

Milwall score two unanswered second-half goals to win this afternoon's South London derby against Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

Millwall moved above their South London rivals Charlton Athletic with an impressive win at The Valley this afternoon.

The Addicks made a fast start and could have been ahead inside five minutes when Bradley Pritchard's strike from range was spilled by David Forde.

Danny Haynes chased the rebound but Forde recovered just in time to scramble the ball clear.

Millwall countered and had a great chance of their own through Liam Trotter, who reacted quickest to Rob Hulse's effort but could only turn wide from close range.

Karleigh Osborne was forced off early on for the Lions, who sent on Tottenham Hotspur loanee Adam Smith in his place.

Forde denied Haynes for a second time before Callum Harriott's low shot was pushed round the post as Charlton finished the half in control.

Millwall made a change just after the interval and the introduction of Jermaine Easter was almost instantly rewarded.

Fine work from debutante Richard Chaplow set the striker free in the penalty area and Easter made no mistake to poke under David Button from close range.

Just after the hour mark Shane Lowry doubled the Lions' advantage with an emphatic free kick from long range.

Charlton brought on Scott Wagstaff and Ricardo Fuller but were unable to find a way back into the match late on.

Kenny Jackett's men held firm in the closing stages to move into the top half of the Championship.
