A second-half strike from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has earned Schalke 04 a 1-1 draw away at Chelsea, who had earlier taken the lead through midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

CHELSEA

Goal

Thibaut Courtois: After retaining his place ahead of Petr Cech, Thibaut Courtois provided another assured display between the sticks for Chelsea. He was helpless to prevent Huntelaar finding the bottom corner in the second half. (7/10)

Defence

Branislav Ivanovic: The versatile defender spent as much time in Schalke's half as he did in his own, but in either area, he performed solidly. Should have had an assist to his name after setting up Fabregas. (7/10)

Gary Cahill: Gary Cahill has been in terrific form, but while he didn't perform too badly, this wasn't one of his stronger displays. Saw Huntelaar's shot go through his legs for the equaliser. (6/10)

John Terry: This was a trademark showing from Chelsea's skipper. However, he picked up a cheap booking in the second half for kicking the ball away. (7/10)

Filipe Luis: The left-back did nothing wrong on his full debut for the Blues. Provided a left-footed option in the final third, which may eventually see him get the nod over Cesar Azpilicueta. (7/10)

Midfield

Nemanja Matic: Nemanja Matic is a key component in Chelsea's engine room and he produced another energetic 90 minutes where he covered plenty of ground. Chelsea look more flexible when he is selected ahead of John Obi Mikel. (7/10)

Cesc Fabregas: The former Arsenal midfielder has been in dazzling form since his return to England and that continued this evening as he scored his first goal for Chelsea. However, his night will be remembered for his miss shortly before half time. (8/10)

Ramires: As always, Ramires was lively in the centre and on the right of midfield, but he provided no end product on a frustrating night. (6/10)

Attack

Willian: It took a while for Willian to warm to the pace of the game, but when he did, he was one of Chelsea's best players. Was a constant threat on the right during the second half before being replaced. (7/10)

Eden Hazard: The Belgian winger is coming off the back of a poor World Cup but he showed against Schalke that he is nearing top gear again. Time and time again, he bamboozled the defence but his final ball wasn't as good as it could have been. (8/10)

Didier Drogba: At the age of 36, Didier Drogba still showed signs that he can cut it at the top level, but he wasted two chances that came his way that he would have perhaps netted five years ago. (7/10)

Substitutes

Oscar: The creative midfielder was introduced soon after Schalke's equaliser but he offered nothing as Schalke shut down his threat on the ball. (6/10)

Loic Remy: The French attacker might find himself on the bench for much of the campaign but he provided a lively cameo in the closing stages. Was unlucky not to find a winner when seeing his shot headed off the line. (7/10)

Diego Costa: Introduced with 15 minutes remaining, but the Spanish international failed to get a glimpse of goal. Likely to be recalled when Chelsea visit Manchester City on Sunday. (6/10)

SCHALKE 04

Goal

Ralf Fahrmann: His night got off to a disappointing start when he let Fabregas's shot go through him, but he responded well to make important interventions in the second half. (7/10)

Defence

Marco Hoger: Marco Hoger was forced to play in an unfamiliar right-back role and he frequently gave Hazard too much time on the ball. The German was booked for time-wasting late on. (6/10)

Kaan Ayhan: The young Turkish centre-back was overpowered by Drogba in the first half, but he recovered to steady the Schalke ship in the second when Chelsea pushed for a winner. (7/10)

Roman Neustadter: Like the majority of the defence, he was playing out of position but he combined well with Ayhan to stop Chelsea adding to their early goal. Prevented Remy from netting a winner with a headed goal-line clearance. (8/10)

Christian Fuchs: Wasn't tested as much as Hoger on the other flank, but defended well to allow Draxler more time in an offensive part of the pitch. (7/10)

Midfield

Dennis Aogo: Played a more reserved role compared to his midfield teammates, but it was needed as Fabregas and Matic threatened to take control in the middle. (7/10)

Kevin-Prince Boateng: The former Portsmouth midfielder provided a hit-and-miss performance but he always made himself available and was never scared to try his luck from distance. (7/10)

Max Meyer: Looked to be fouled in the build-up to Chelsea's goal, but other than that, the youngster enjoyed his evening at Stamford Bridge. Has a big future ahead of him. (7/10)

Sidney Sam: Provided Schalke's biggest threat in the opening stages before allowing Draxler to take centre stage. His shooting let him down in this match. (7/10)

Julian Draxler: The 20-year-old showed tonight why he is one of German football's biggest talents. He should have scored just before half time, but after the break, he was superb, and the way that he turned Matic inside out during one attack suggested that there is more to come from him. (8/10)

Attack

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar: The club vice-captain led from the front in place of Benedikt Howedes. He can impose himself on opposition defences, but it was his movement that troubled Chelsea. Deserved his goal. (7/10)

Substitutes

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting: The Cameroon international was sent on in the latter stages to break up play and he did so to great effect. Produced one last-ditch challenge to deny Hazard in the penalty area. (7/10)

Tranquillo Barnetta: Sent on with 12 minutes remaining, but didn't influence the match as Chelsea dominated. (6/10)

Chinedu Obasi: Barely touched the ball during his brief time on the pitch. (6/10)
