The European Super Cup was contested between the Champions League winners Bayern Munich and the Europa League winners Chelsea at the Eden Arena in Prague on Friday.
Bayern had the majority of the ball in the first period, but a strike from Fernando Torres after eight minutes ensured that the Premier League outfit entered the break ahead.
Bayern were level in the early stages of the second half courtesy of a strike from Franck Ribery, but that was how it ended as the match entered extra time.
Chelsea struck first through Eden Hazard, but Javi Martinez equalised in the final minute to send the match to a penalty shootout.
Xherdan Shaqiri's penalty sent Bayern into a 5-4 lead, before Romelu Lukaku's miss meant that the German outfit secured the trophy.

Evening all! Well, this trophy would not have been on either side's list of priorities at the beginning of the season, but there is no question that this match has a bit of added spice with Bayern manager Pep Guardiola and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho facing off once more. To suggest that there has never been any love lost between the pair would be putting it kindly.
There is underlying respect between the two men, but that is as far as it goes. The duo went head-to-head for the La Liga title during Mourinho’s first two seasons at Real Madrid before Guardiola stepped down as Barcelona boss for his sabbatical. Both are now in new positions, but the rivalry still very much exists between two of the finest managers in the modern game.
Of course, this match will provide a rerun of the 2012 Champions League final in Munich. Bayern entered the match as the overwhelming favourites, but Chelsea arrived in the final having seen off Barcelona in the previous round. The Allianz Arena expected another European crown for the home side, but Chelsea had certainly not read the script.
It took a while for Bayern to break the Chelsea rear-guard – 83 minutes in fact – but it had appeared that the Germans would ease to the crown. Didier Drogba had other ideas, however, as the Blues forward thumped a powerful header into the back of the net two minutes from time. It was also the Ivorian that had the last word, with his penalty winning the shootout for the Premier League club.
BREAKING TEAM NEWS: Some big news coming out of the Bayern camp ahead of kickoff with skipper Phillip Lahm seemingly being selected in a midfield role this evening. Rafinha comes into the team at right-back, while there are also starts for Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos. Bastian Schweinsteiger, as expected, is absent. We are still awaiting confirmation of the Chelsea XI.

Bayern might have recovered from the Chelsea defeat in 2012 with the Champions League title last season, but there is no question that revenge will be on their minds. Quite how Bayern managed to lose that match despite dominating for the entirety remains a mystery, but they certainly feel that they should be in a position to make it three European titles in a row this season, rather than two.
As mentioned, Bayern qualified for this competition after winning the Champions League last season. Sometimes teams ease their way into the final, but the German outfit demolished favourites Barcelona on their way to claiming the title. Dortmund provided a strong test, but an Arjen Robben strike one minute from time ensured that they picked up the trophy.
Chelsea, meanwhile, were triumphant in the Europa League with a 2-1 win over Portuguese side Benfica in Amsterdam. They too left it late to claim the trophy with Branislav Ivanovic winning it in the third minute of stoppage time. While it was a welcome trophy, the Blues will hope that they can progress into the latter stages of the Champions League this time around.
BREAKING TEAM NEWS: Big call from Mourinho this evening as the Portuguese selects Fernando Torres in attack. The Spaniard has been out of favour thus far this season, but he does indeed start through the middle. David Luiz also returns to the back four, but there is no place in the starting XI for Juan Mata. Full team news to follow.

What must Romelu Lukaku be thinking? He had a fine campaign with West Bromwich Albion last season, but he cannot buy a start under Mourinho. John Terry also drops out of the Chelsea side this evening. Michael Essien is also among the subs for the English outfit, but Frank Lampard and Ramires continue in the middle of the midfield. There is no sign of Demba Ba, however, who looks certain to leave Stamford Bridge before the transfer deadline.
Chelsea were also present in this competition last season, but as the winners of the Champions League. They came up against Europa League winners Atletico Madrid in the final, but they came up well short as Radamel Falcao scored three times in a 4-1 win for the Spanish outfit. This trophy is not a priority, but it is a chance for a team to put a marker down for the rest of the season.
Bayern have never won the European Super Cup, but Chelsea have won it once - in 1998. AC Milan hold the most titles (five). Barcelona have also won it four times, while Liverpool and Dutch outfit Ajax have won it three times apiece. Perhaps the most obscure team to have won it is Belgian side Mechelen, who were triumphant in 1988. How’s that for a quiz question?
To suggest that Bayern were the best team in Europe last season would be the biggest understatement of the century. Sometimes teams can ease their way into the latter stages of the competition and perhaps get a few lucky breaks here and there. Well, that was not the case for the Bundesliga side who demolished all in their path last season. They were the best team in Europe by a considerable distance.
That was, however, under the stewardship of Jupp Heynckes, who bowed out at the end of the season after winning the Bundesliga, the Champions League and the DFB-Pokal. They simply stormed to their domestic championship last season, winning 29 times and losing just once, eventually finishing an incredible 25 points ahead of Dortmund, who were the second-best side in Europe last season.
There has been a few changes at the club this summer with the likes of Mario Gomez allowed to leave and Thiago and Mario Gotze among those that were added to the squad. They have made an encouraging start to the season with four wins from five in all competitions, but it would be fair to say that they are in a slight transitional period under Guardiola.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have also been active in the transfer market this summer with the likes of Willian, Marco van Ginkel, Andre Schurrle and latterly Samuel Eto’o arriving. Mourinho, who is in his second spell with the club, had been openly pursuing Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, but it appears that move is dead in the water.
They too have made an encouraging start to the season with two wins and a draw from their first three league games, latterly a 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Monday. It is clear that Mourinho is not too happy with his striking options, however, with Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku seemingly not in his first-team plans. Although the former starts this evening.
There also remains the strange situation surrounding Juan Mata. The Spaniard scored 20 goals and contributed 35 assists in 60 appearances last season, but it does not appear that he is part of Mourinho’s plans, which is quite extraordinary. A number of clubs are believed to have made subtle enquiries, but thus far Chelsea have repelled the interest with the transfer deadline coming to a close.
Overall, Mourinho has won just three of his 15 meetings against Guardiola as a manager. That really is an incredible statistic. When asked about that record in a pre-match press conference on Thursday, the Portuguese responded: “Your statistics are wrong - very wrong, very wrong. But I don't want to discuss that because it's not important. I'll just say it's wrong. Go there and see what happened with Inter in the Champions League semi-final. The league records in Spain, the Copa del Rey in Spain, the Super Cup in Spain. You are very, very wrong. You are wrong but it's not important. It's not me against him, it's club against club. That's not important."
However, Mourinho quickly followed with: "Maybe you are right and I am wrong but I don't care. This is not about us, it's about Chelsea and Bayern." It must be said that the atmosphere is just sensational inside the stadium. Try telling these supporters that this trophy is not a priority. Both sides desperately want to win this match make no mistake about that.
Here we go then. Both sets of players join us on the pitch ahead of kickoff. PREDICTION: We are just about two minutes from kickoff, which can mean only one thing, time for my prediction. I shouldn't think that there will be too many goals between the two sides this evening, but I do expect Bayern to come out on top, just. I am backing a 2-1 win for the Champions League winners.
Quite a picture in the couple of minutes leading up to kickoff with plenty of colour on display in the stadium. Meanwhile, a number of women were parading about with skirts full of balloons. All a bit off fun! Anyway, now we are ready for some football two minutes later than expected. Bayern get the action underway on this mild evening in Prague.
It is understood that Guardiola and Mourinho had a handshake in the tunnel prior to kickoff this evening, which is good to hear. Bayern have taken control of the possession in the opening couple of moments with the likes of Kroos and Lahm seeing plenty of the ball. Chelsea immediately retreat into their defensive shape.
First half-chance of the match comes to Bayern as Boateng's cross finds the head of Mandzukic, but his effort is just wide of the target. Not too much from the English outfit have thus far with Bayern dominating possession of the ball. You sense that Chelsea will need to be patient in the early stages in Prague.
Handbags between Luiz and Mandzukic as the Brazilian defender appears to hold onto the striker after the ball had been played. The Bayern forward is little bit lucky there as it appeared to swing an elbow towards Luiz. Ribery has possession down the right moments later, but he loses control at the vital moment. Still goalless with six minutes on the clock in this Super Cup encounter.
First effort of the match for Chelsea comes from Eden Hazard as the Belgian strikes one from outside the box, but it was always drifting wide of the target. Ribery has a half-chance down the other end as he attempts to find the bottom corner from inside the box, but he drags it wide of the target. End-to-end football in the last couple of moments.
GOAL! Bayern 0-1 Chelsea (Torres)
Oh my word, what a goal. It's brilliant work from Hazard as the Belgian drives into the Bayern half before finding Schurrle, the German in turn finds Torres, who curls a wonderful effort into the top corner. That is some strike from the Spaniard. Who saw that coming?
Good response from Bayern as the German advance immediately down the other end with Ribery, but his cross is met by a blue shirt. Lahm has a volley from close range moments later, but it was straight into the arms of Cech. All the signs are that we will have an entertaining match this evening. It has been some 11 minutes.
Real opportunity for Bayern to get themselves back into the match as Mandzukic finds Muller with a lovely touch, but the German just loses control at the vital moment. It has been all one-way traffic since the goal with Bayern penning the Europa League winners into their own half. I would be astounded if Bayern did not create a couple of openings in the next few moments.
Bayern have only failed to score once in their last 66 matches, but that was against London opposition in the shape of Arsenal in last season's Champions League. Good pressure for Chelsea in the last couple of moments with Schurrle causing problems down the right, but Alaba is across to make the clearance. Incredibly open match with 15 minutes on the clock.
Good pressure from Bayern in the last couple of minutes as they continue to pass and probe outside the Chelsea box. Robben comes close to forcing the issue with a driving run towards Luiz, but the Brazilian makes the clearance. Torres has an opportunity on the counter moments later, but he curls his effort high and wide of the post. End-to-end football with 18 minutes on the clock in Prague.
It's good stuff from Chelsea as they once more quell the Bayern attack before breaking with Hazard, but the winger decides to keep possession rather than look for the run of Torres. It is not a bad idea with Bayern having 68% of the ball thus far. It must be said that the atmosphere remains just sensational with the Bayern supporters letting their voices known. Can their team respond?
Still no joy for the Champions League holders with Chelsea dealing with each high cross into the box. Ribery attempts to take matters into his own hands by sliding a pass beyond the Chelsea defence, but Cech is out to collect. No real chances for either side in the last couple of moments, but you just get the feeling that the opportunity will come.
Indeed the chance does come as Ribery collects possession on the edge of the box before curling an effort towards the bottom corner, but Cech is down to make a fine save. The resulting corner is met by the head of Muller, but the danger is cleared. The first yellow card is handed to Ribery moments later, following a foul on Ramires.
Not the best defending from Luiz as the Brazilian fells Muller outside the box. The resulting set piece is delivered to Kroos, but he loses possession under the challenge of Lampard. Hazard collects the ball down the other end moments later, but Dante is across to make the clearance. Bayern are having some problems dealing with the Belgian there is no question about that.
Not too much to report in the last couple of moments with the referee forced to intervene following a number of late challenges, which has just slowed the tempo somewhat. It's brilliant football from Bayern moments later as Alaba finds himself unmarked in the box, but his cross is met by a blue shirt.
Luiz looks an accident waiting to happen at the moment as Luiz pulls Mandzukic to the ground, only to be saved by the offside flag. CHANCE! Another wonderful chance for Torres to score his second of the match as the Spaniard collects a pass from Schurrle before turning and striking an effort on goal, but it was always moving high and wide of the target. Bayern continue to dominate the possession, but Chelsea are so dangerous on the counter. That has been the story of the game thus far.
Again Muller is involved for Bayern as he collects possession down the left before whipping a dangerous cross into the box, but there are no takers. Has anyone seen Robben?! He was arguably Bayern's best performer last season, but he has just not been in this one. Real sense of frustration from the German outfit at the moment as Chelsea continue to break up each attack with relative ease.
Another opportunity for Ribery to test Cech from inside the box as he collects a pass from Lahm, but again he gets it horribly wrong as he curls his effort high and wide of the crossbar. He is much better than that. You just get the feeling that if Chelsea can hold on until the interval they will have a real chance of getting something this evening.

The Blues have hit the target on just one occasion, with that effort proving to be decisive at this stage of proceedings. Bayern are worth that equaliser there is no question about that. Bayern almost turn it around as Ribery strikes one on the half-volley, but it just moves wide of the post. What a Super Cup we have had and it is only 50 minutes old. I would be astounded if we had seen the last of the goals. Chelsea really need to settle here.
Slight sense of ill-feeling between the two sides in the last few moments with neither prepared to accept an apology when brought to the round. Chelsea just cannot keep hold of the possession at the moment with Bayern committing players to each attack. However, as we have seen, Chelsea have been devastating on the counter. Two contrasting styles in Prague, but equally effective.

There is plenty of talent sitting on the sidelines there is no question about that. The next goal - if we indeed have one - could be all-important in a fixture of this magnitude.

Confirmation that Cole was booked for attempting to gain a yard or two in the wall. Time is running out for Bayern as Chelsea clear the danger once more. It has not been pretty, but it does appear that they are heading for the Super Cup as Boateng thumps it high and wide of the crossbar.
