FA stand by John Terry decision

FA board member Heather Rabbatts believes that the governing body were right to strip John Terry of the England captaincy.

Football Association board member Heather Rabbatts believes that the right decision was made regarding John Terry's position as England captain.

The English governing body made the choice to strip the Chelsea defender of the Three Lions captaincy due to allegations of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers centre-back Anton Ferdinand.

Rabbatts, who is mixed race, believes that it would have been 'inappropriate' to allow Terry to keep the armband.

"It is not rocket science, given who I am, that this was an issue that I would feel strongly about," Rabbatts told The Telegraph.

"The principle of innocent until proven guilty is absolutely paramount. But in other walks of life, if an employee who carries additional reputational responsibilities is subject to charges, they are suspended.

"Given the FA's policies and priorities, and given the reputation that the England captain absolutely has to stand by, it was not appropriate for him to be captain. I think the board and in particular the chairman showed leadership. It is a decision the board can stand by."

Terry will stand trial after the European Championships from July 9 over racism allegations.
