Ex-referee Dermot Gallagher: 'Diego Costa very lucky to escape red card'

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher says that Chelsea star Diego Costa is "very lucky" to have escaped a red card against Arsenal.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has claimed that Chelsea striker Diego Costa was "very lucky" to have escaped getting sent off in Saturday's clash against Arsenal.

The 26-year-old was booked by referee Mike Dean for a confrontation with Gabriel Paulista, who was eventually sent off for kicking out at the controversial striker.

Moments before that though, TV cameras showed Costa catching Laurent Koscielny in the face with a swinging arm.

"I thought Costa was very, very lucky to stay on the field because of what happened with Koscielny," Gallagher told Sky Sports News. "He put his hands out, he knows what he's doing and what we have to assume is that the referee hasn't seen that.

"I think if the referee sees that then he gives a red card but I don't think he did see it because he didn't take action. A referee with the quality and experience of Mike Dean would have sent him off there if he had seen it."

Dean will meet with the Football Association today to review the incident and discuss the potential of further punishment.
