Jose Mourinho: 'Chelsea's 2013 Europa League win was bad for the club'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says that the club's Europa League triumph in 2013 under Rafael Benitez was "not good" for the club.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has described the Blues' 2013 Europa League success as "not good" for a club of their stature.

Rafael Benitez, whom Chelsea fans struggled to warm to following his six-year spell as Liverpool manager, guided the West London outfit to success in the second-tier competition.

Benitez took over on an interim basis before Mourinho returned following the sacking of Roberto di Matteo, who oversaw the team win the Champions League in 2012.

Despite the Europa League win in Amsterdam adding further silverware to Chelsea's cabinet, Mourinho has suggested that it was detrimental to the squad.

During BT Sport documentary Jose Mourinho: Portrait of a Champion, the Portuguese coach said: "When I returned, I felt the experience of Chelsea playing Europa League was not good.

"The Europa League is a different competition [to the Champions League]. The Europa League is a different level of competition for a different level of player and a different level of club. It is not good for a big club to go there and win it."

Chelsea will discover their group opponents for this season's Champions League campaign this afternoon.
