Phil Jagielka: 'Everton didn't compete against Chelsea'

Everton captain Phil Jagielka admits that his side were second best against Chelsea and could not compete with the new league leaders during their 5-0 defeat.

Everton captain Phil Jagielka has admitted that his side were "second best all over the park" to Chelsea during their 5-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge this evening.

Quickfire goals from Eden Hazard and Marcos Alonso put the hosts in control before Diego Costa, Hazard again and Pedro hammered home their dominance.

The result saw Chelsea climb to the top of the table, and Jagielka acknowledged that the Toffees simply couldn't compete with Antonio Conte's side.

"We were second best all over the park - we thoroughly deserved to lose," he is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"Every time they went forward they had a chance of scoring a goal. Frustration for the fans coming down, but hopefully it is just one game and we can bounce back.

"You don't want to give any side a 2-0 head start - never mind someone of their quality - because then you're just chasing the game. You have to come here and compete and we didn't do that."

The defeat leaves Everton sixth in the table, now five points off the top four.
