Championship club Coventry City confirm that they have appointed Chelsea legend Frank Lampard as their new head coach.

Coventry City have announced the appointment of Frank Lampard as their new head coach.

The Sky Blues had been searching for a fresh face in the dugout ever since ending Mark Robins' seven-year stint at the club earlier this month.

Rhys Carr has since guided the club to two points from three games in charge, against high-flying trio Sunderland, Sheffield United and Burnley respectively.

However, negotiations with Chelsea legend Lampard have been ongoing in the background, reports having indicated that the Englishman was the preferred candidate from the beginning of the process.

On Thursday morning, Coventry confirmed that they had appointed the 46-year-old on a contract that will run through to 2027.

"Knows what is needed"

Lampard is best known for his mixed tenures at Chelsea and Everton, the positives being a top-four finish with the Blues serving a transfer ban and successfully keeping the Toffees in the Premier League after a relegation scrap.

Prior to those spells, though, Lampard took Deby County to the 2018-19 Championship playoff final before suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa.

Speaking to the club's official website, owner Doug King seemingly took all three achievements into consideration when deciding to target Lampard as Robins' successor.

King said: "I am delighted that Frank Lampard has agreed to join our club as Head Coach. Frank cut his teeth in the Championship and knows what is needed in this League to be successful.

"His experiences thereafter at Chelsea and Everton will ensure he brings to our talented squad clear understanding of exactly what is needed to succeed at the very top level that we as a club are striving to reach."

Lampard moves to the CBS Arena with Coventry sitting in 17th position in the Championship table, 10 points adrift of the playoffs and two points above the relegation zone.

Lampard's backroom staff

Familiar faces in Joe Edwards and Chris Jones will be joining the Midlands outfit to form part of Lampard's backroom staff.

Edwards spent time as assistant manager to Lampard at Chelsea and Everton before a disappointing stint as Millwall head coach.

As well as at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park, Jones was also fitness coach under Lampard at Derby.
