Daniel Sturridge: 'Chelsea didn't give me a chance'

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge claims that he wasn't afforded a real chance to show what he can do during his time at Chelsea.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has claimed that he wasn't given a fair chance during his time at Chelsea.

The Reds forward moved to Anfield for around £12m in January 2013, and has impressed during his time by netting 36 goals in 49 appearances for the five-time European Cup winners.

However, the England international said that he left Stamford Bridge because he was tired of being played out of position.

Speaking to Liverpool's official TV station, he said: "I didn't get the opportunity, regardless of what people say. I'm a central striker, and at Chelsea, I didn't start a single game in the Premier League as a striker. It improved my game, because I can use my right foot a lot more from playing right wing, and I do thank [Andre Villas-Boas].

"If I ever see him, I always thank him because he game a chance, and he was the only Chelsea manager who did that. We won trophies and it was a great time, but I left there and as I say, it was bittersweet.

"I wasn't given a run of games, but if I had and I hadn't done the business as a central striker, I'd have said 'fair play'. But I'd get a game, I'd score two goals in the centre-forward position and then I'm on the bench for another four or five games. As a young player, there's only so much you can take, before you think, 'I'm not wanted here, I'm not loved here'".

Sturridge scored 21 goals last term to finish second behind teammate Luis Suarez in the Premier League's scoring charts.
