Chelsea transfer news: Gallagher exit edging nearer with 'negotiations underway'

Chelsea are reportedly edging closer to facilitating the exit of England international Conor Gallagher.

Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have reportedly opened negotiations regarding the transfer of Conor Gallagher.

The midfielder has made no secret of wanting to remain at Stamford Bridge to continue to represent his boyhood club, who he captained for the majority of last season.

Gallagher impressively chipped in with five goals and seven assists, playing an integral role in ensuring that the Blues finished in the top six of the Premier League standings.

However, it has been well documented for some time that Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have been prepared to cash in on the 24-year-old, rather than offer him a contract extension past 2025.

While there has been, and still is, the prospect of Gallagher running down his contract before departing on a free transfer, the England international faces a period of inactivity should he take that approach.

Chelsea, Atletico begin talks

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea and Atletico are now in direct talks to determine whether they can agree a deal for Gallagher.

Previous reports have indicated that the respective clubs have been far apart in their valuation of the player, his contract situation not helping matters.

Nevertheless, Romano suggests that Chelsea are prepared to lower their previous demands of in excess of £40m and instead drop their asking price to €35m (£29.5m).

Although it is added that would increase to €40m (£33.7m) with other clauses, the fee is far more attainable for Atletico than it once seemed.

Diego Simeone has allegedly had Gallagher on the top of his midfield shortlist since May, a factor that will inevitably play its part in the player's decision.

Earlier this month, it was claimed that England teammate Kieran Trippier, who previously represented Atletico, had spoken favourably to Gallagher about his experience.

Will there now be a swift conclusion?

With Gallagher having now had two weeks off since England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, he is approaching the time when he would expect to return to training.

However, with Chelsea currently in the United States, there is little chance of him flying out should a transfer be in the offing, subsequently speeding up the exit process should a fee be agreed.

Both clubs will want to find a resolution as soon as possible. Chelsea wish to push ahead with adding a new striker to their ranks, while Atletico would want to provide Gallagher with time to settle before the start of the new La Liga campaign. body check tags ::
