Jose Mourinho critical of Roy Hodgson's England tactics

Jose Mourinho believes that Roy Hodgson's poor decision making played a part in England's dire 2014 World Cup campaign.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has criticised Roy Hodgson for being too cautious in England's 2014 World Cup campaign.

The Three Lions exited the showpiece tournament early on having lost their opening two games, being edged out 2-1 by Italy and Uruguay in South America.

Mourinho believes that experienced boss Hodgson made the wrong call in that defeat against a Luis Suarez-inspired Uruguay by failing to push on when his side required a goal.

"They are losing and, if they lose, they are out of the tournament, so they have to score," the Portuguese is quoted as saying by Goal.com. "They made two changes at 1-0 down. But when Roy Hodgson made these changes - [Raheem] Sterling out, [Ross] Barkley in, then [Adam] Lallana in for [Danny] Welbeck - I couldn't see a strategic change. Same tactical model, same system.

"So maybe take off [Leighton] Baines and play [Gary] Cahill sweeper, [Glenn] Johnson and [Phil] Jagielka marking one each, an extra man to midfield or attack. Then Uruguay have to adapt."

England went on to finish bottom of Group D, taking a single point from their three games which came in a dead rubber against Costa Rica.
