Andre Hainault scored a stoppage-time winner as defending Eastern Conference champions Houston Dynamo began their MLS season with a victory over Club Deportivo Chivas USA on Sunday night.
Dynamo controlled the game for large periods and Chivas had goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to thank for keeping them level on numerous occasions.
The 29-year-old made a string of fine saves to deny Bobby Boswell, Calen Carr, and then Macoumba Kandji.
Despite the visitors' dominance, former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel had a golden chance to give Chivas the lead on 70 minutes, but the Columbian headed Ryan Smith's fired cross narrowly over.
The deserved Houston goal came in the second minute of additional time as Hainault tapped home after Kennedy had failed to hold a powerful effort from Scottish midfielder Adam Moffat.
