Neither Colchester United nor Shrewsbury Town have been able to open the scoring in a goalless first half of League One action.
Shrewsbury wasted an opportunity to take the lead early on when Tom Eaves headed over from just a few yards out following Jermaine Grandison's cross from the right.
Colchester took control of the game following a lively start from the visitors and Alex Gilbey threatened for the home side with a long-range effort which flew over the crossbar.
Brian Wilson was agonisingly close to handing Colchester the lead from a free kick but his strike rattled against the crossbar before bouncing to safety.
Dominic Vose found time late in the first half to test the woodwork again when he struck the bar from 25 yards as Colchester were left frustrated once more.
