Domagoj Vida avoids ban for 'glory to Ukraine' celebration

Croatia centre-back Domagoj Vida escapes a two-match ban for dedicating his side's penalty-shootout victory over Russia to Ukraine.

Croatia defender Domagoj Vida has avoided a ban after he dedicated his side's penalty shootout victory over Russia to Ukraine.

Vida can be seen on a video shouting "Glory to Ukraine" in Ukrainian following Saturday's triumph, while former player Ognjen Vukojevic says "this victory is for Dynamo and for Ukraine" in Croatian.

Russia has been in conflict with Ukraine in recent years and Vida's comments could have seen him face a two-match ban, which would have ruled him out of Wednesday's semi-final against England and consequently end his tournament.

However, FIFA has ruled that a fine is adequate punishment for Vida, who scored an extra-time header in the quarter-finals and then scored in the shootout to help them into the last four.

"We can confirm that FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has sent a warning to the player Domagoj Vida due to his video statement following the 2018 FIFA World Cup match between Russia and Croatia," read a statement from FIFA.

Croatia have reached the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
