Crystal Palace eyeing up relegated duo as Vicente Guaita replacement?

Crystal Palace are reportedly targeting Alex McCarthy and Daniel Iversen after Roy Hodgson revealed that goalkeeper Vicente Guaita wants to leave the club.

Crystal Palace have reportedly identified Alex McCarthy and Daniel Iversen as possible replacements for Vicente Guaita.

Roy Hodgson has gone on record to reveal that Guaita no longer wants to stay at the club; feeling 'disenchanted' at losing his place in the side to Sam Johnstone late last season.

Guaita was initially signed by Hodgson in his first spell at the club back in 2018, but after picking up an injury shortly after the 76-year-old arrived back at Selhurst Park, he never regained his spot.

The Spanish keeper has one year left on his current deal with Palace - after signing an extension in January - but the Daily Mail claims that he is seeking out a return to Getafe.

Getafe's current number one David Soria has already been linked with a move to Palace this summer, as well as a potential move to Real Madrid, opening up the opportunity for Guaita to return to the club that he left five years ago.

The 36-year-old's time at Selhurst Park appears to be all but over though after Hodgson admitted he has refused to play in any of the club's pre-season friendlies.

Speaking to Viaplay, Hodgson said: "He's (Johnstone) the only one at the moment because Guaita is disenchanted with the club, he's made it clear to the club that really he would like to move on."

Hodgson also hinted that the Spaniard may not be granted his wish unless the club see fit and if they sign a replacement, adding: "He's been refusing to play in our games so far but the complication is that he has a year's contract so it's up to the club to decide really. Not him."

In light of the news that Guaita is forcing an exit, Palace have been linked with two goalkeepers who may come in to challenge Johnstone for a starting spot.

Another report from the Daily Mail claims that McCarthy and Iversen - keepers who were relegated with Southampton and Leicester City respectively last season - are both attainable targets for the Eagles.

While McCarthy was given 90 minutes in Southampton's EFL Cup defeat to Gillingham on Tuesday night, the Saints have retained Gavin Bazunu, and he looks set to be the number one this season after starting their opening league encounter with Sheffield Wednesday.

Joe Lumley has also been signed at St. Mary's after two full seasons of action in the Championship, therefore potentially allowing for McCarthy's exit.

Iversen also did not feature for Leicester in their Championship opener at the weekend.

After taking over from Danny Ward in the Premier League run-in, Iversen was unable to help the Foxes to survival.

However, neither goalkeeper was in the matchday squad for their win over Coventry City on Sunday.

Mads Hermansen has arrived from Brondby and instantly taken over as number one under new manager Enzo Maresca, with Jakub Stolarczyk in reserve.
