Ex-FA chairman David Bernstein rejects Jack Wilshere's England stance

Former FA chairman David Bernstein disagrees with Jack Wilshere's stance that England players should be English.

Former Football Association chairman David Bernstein disagrees with Jack Wilshere's view that players should not use residency rules to become eligible for England.

The debate arose when Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson said that he would be monitoring the situation of Manchester United youngster Adnan Januzaj, who is eligible to play for a number of nations, including Belgium and Albania.

Wilshere claimed yesterday that players in the Three Lions setup should be English and not deemed eligible if they have lived in the country for a certain number of years.

"We live in a changing world," Bernstein told BBC Radio Five Live. "There is much more fluidity in terms of population movement.

"I would say we must play within the rules but if within rules players are eligible, I would be inclined to pick best players we can get. Other countries do that. We have to play within the rules and get the best team we can."

The England senior team are currently preparing to take on Montenegro and Poland in their final World Cup qualifiers this week.
