Former England captain Terry Butcher describes the hunt for the next national coach as a "farce".

Former England captain Terry Butcher has described the hunt for the next national coach as a "farce".

The Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager has said that the Football Association must be "bolder" if they want to entice Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp.

FA general secretary Alex Horne has said that a decision on who will succeed Fabio Capello will not be made until the end of the season.

However, Butcher believes that the new man should be in place sooner than that.

"I think it's a farce," the 55-year-old told BBC Radio 5. "We've got two warm-up games in May before the European Championships. You're looking to get a settled squad and an idea of what that the starting side will be for the first match at the Euros and we're a million miles away from that.

"I think the FA must be bolder and if they want Harry Redknapp, really go for him. If that's not to be the case, then get someone else in, if that's what they want to do."

Butcher also stated his belief that the next manager should be an Englishman.

"I hear the point about [English] managers not winning anything," he added. "But you look at the Germans, they put people in charge who haven't won anything in club management yet their national team still does well. It doesn't matter about how many trophies you've won, it's what you can bring to the table."

Butcher has been manager of Inverness Caledonia Thistle since 2009.
