Adam Lallana hopes Gareth Southgate gets permanent England job

Adam Lallana is hopeful that Gareth Southgate will get the England job on a permanent basis.

Adam Lallana has claimed that he would like Gareth Southgate to be given the England job on a permanent basis.

The 46-year-old was handed the role by the Football Association for an interim period after Sam Allardyce was sacked just 67 days after being appointed.

The former Sunderland boss was forced out of the job after being secretly filmed telling undercover journalists from The Telegraph how to get around the FA's ban on third-party ownership of players.

Southgate, who has been the England Under-21 boss since 2013, has overseen a win and a draw while in charge of the senior team, and he will complete his temporary stint after games against Scotland and Spain.

"You need stability," BT Sport quotes Lallana as saying. "What you don't have at England is the time that you get at club level.

"You can't prepare for a campaign as you would for a league over the course of the season. It's not possible so it's a different challenge.

"I'm sure Gareth will want to have that and we are ready to fight for him in the matches. Hopefully he will do well enough to get the job on a permanent basis."

Meanwhile, Southgate has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will captain England in Friday's World Cup qualifier against Scotland, despite being dropped from the Three Lions' last outing.
